For the uninitiated: Tree Law refers to the often VERY strict and punishing laws surrounding the removal, upkeep, planting, and general status of trees. Many people don’t know that cutting a few branches off a neighbor’s tree can be literal of pounds of paperwork and excessive fines (we’re talking hundreds to thousands if that fancy foreign tree dies as a result) and hit you out of nowhere.
Trees are very serious business in the USA in particular. Especially city owned trees. Damaging a city tree is subjecting yourself to grueling hours upon hours of court battles (lawyer fees + stress) and/or hefty fines, and there are stipulations like above that can be in place.
Mature trees, as seen above here, can run you hundreds of dollars just to replace, not counting the money spent on fines. Each tree, mind you, must be replaced and has it’s own individual set of fines. Assuming they aren’t rare, endangered, or otherwise specialty trees, of course, which can be over a thousand, as well as net you new and individual fines from wildlife services...
I see about 10 here, and there may be more down the road, but let’s focus on these 10, and I’ll add some conversions for overseas friends who are curious. In Los Angeles, damaging or removing a city side walk tree can cost you between 1,000 - 1,800 dollars. Let’s assume they’ll be nice and NOT rule it a felony, so we’ll round out with the misdemeanors cap of 1k, as well assume as that these trees are standard and 400 dollars to replace. Now, the service of transporting and planting the new trees aside, this part of the sidewalk will already cost them 14,000 dollars to replenish with trees.
In European pounds, that’s ~10,736 sterling. In Australian dollars, it’s ~20,551. And in Canadian dollars, ~18,438. For this stretch of street alone. On the low side. Not counting any extra fines for excessive damage, or the actual cost of doing the back breaking labor/renting expensive machines to uproot and replant new trees. (Tree removal alone can cost them another 1,000 USD each, and they’ll likely be fined for the fact the road must be closed to do it, for example)
Additionally, because it was done to multiple trees, the fines will likely be MUCH higher, and they better hope those trees weren’t part of any wildlife preservation or endangered plants protection cases.
TL;DR: If they had no authority to cut those trees, shit’s about to get pricey.
Happy birthday, Nelson Mandela! (July 18, 1918)
One of the most famous freedom fighters in the history of Africa, Nelson Mandela was born into a prominent Xhosa family in Mvezo, South Africa. He studied law and worked as a lawyer in Johannesburg before involving himself in the struggle against apartheid, the system of racial segregation imposed by South Africa's ruling white minority. He joined the African National Congress, which he would later go on to lead, as well as the South African Communist Party, having come to embrace socialism and Pan-Africanism. He was originally committed to nonviolent protest, but ultimately founded the uMkhonto we Sizwe ("Spear of the Nation" in Xhosa), the ANC's paramilitary wing, and led them in violent resistance to the apartheid government. Mandela was captured and imprisoned for 27 years, becoming an internationally-recognized political prisoner and representative of the anti-apartheid struggle before his release in 1990. Mandela was instrumental in negotiating the end of apartheid, and in South Africa's first multiracial elections, was elected President. He served from 1994 to 1999, overseeing a reckoning with apartheid's legacy, as well as introducing moderate social reforms, though never pursuing particularly radical policies. After leaving office, Mandela remained an elder statesman and an international figure until his death in 2013.
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for. But, my lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
i imagine it would be like that gif of the woman stumbling horrified through the city and keeps seeing things that remind her of gay people but with trans folks
At first Netflix said, come write for us. We’ll save your cancelled shows and write about whatever niche story you want. Our algorithm says people will watch it!
Then a few years later they said, regardless of our promises or contract obligations we are cancelling shows after two seasons without telling anyone. Turns out no matter how loved a show is, we get less subscriptions after the second season.
How many subscriptions did we bring you? Netflix won’t say.
So writers started writing two season shows. Just give us two seasons, Netflix. Like you promised.
Then Netflix said, oops sorry! Turns out your show didn’t premiere at #1 and the views in the first day weren’t what we wanted so we’re cancelling your second season.
What were the numbers? How many people watched our show? Netflix doesn’t say.
Then, they did something extra special. They started taking shows and splitting their first season into two halves. Inside Job was not two seasons. It was one season split in half.
Oops! Sorry! The second half of your first season didn’t do as well as the first half, so now your show is cancelled!
Why? How many people? How much money? These companies are making cash hand over fist and they refuse to tell people the truth: people loved your show. Loved it. But some corpo exec wanted an infinite money making machine. Do you know how long shows are in production for before you watch them? Years. Like, 5+, even 10+ years. And Netflix gives it less than a week before they decide whether you’re getting cancelled.
